Belmont-Cragin has been an industrial and commercial community on the northwest side of Chicago since the first saloon opened in 1835. Shortly thereafter numerous manufacturing plants, fabricating sheet metal to rivets, and railroad facilities brought many workers from the city and Europe to what was then called Cragin.
This large growth in population during the 1920s and 1930s brought massive real estate development consisting of Chicago-style brick bungalows, cape cods and two-flat homes. Many of these properties have been well-kept or recently renovated and are still in existence today.
Real estate prices in Belmont-Cragin have experienced a large decline since the real estate collapse of 2007-2008. The median home price for either a single-family home or condominium is currently under $150,000.
