Beginning in the 1920's, one of the first urban studies of the City of Chicago was conducted by the Social Science Research Committee at the University of Chicago. One result of this study was the establishment of 77 community areas within the city to aid in the collection of data for a long-term population and sociological study. Of course Chicago is a much different place than it was nearly a century ago. Through time the original 77 communities have been further dissected to approximately 228 distinct neighborhoods.

Each neighborhood has its own distinct feel. Some neighborhoods have a small town within a city feel while others are ultra-urban or even somewhat industrial.
