East Side Real Estate

East Side is a far-south community of Chicago nestled between the east bank of the Calumet River (hence its name) and the Indiana state line. Until about 1970, the community was dominated by workers employed at the nearby steel mills and the once thriving Port of Chicago. The area is famous for the union unrest that occurred during the 1930s particularly the Memorial Day Massacre of 1937 in which ten protesting steelworkers were killed by police.

While the community has a deep industrial past, there are many parks and outdoors areas in East Side. Calumet Park provides excellent views of the harbor and Lake Michigan and Eggers Woods provides many recreational opportunities on Wolf Lake.

While much of the industry has left the area, a quiet lakefront community remains in East Side. You will find many fine examples of the Chicago-style bungalow in the area with well-kept lawns and friendly neighbors. There has also been some recent new construction in the area and prices are affordable.
