The South Shore community is a historic lakefront neighborhood just south of Hyde Park. The area is probably best known for the South Shore Cultural Center. This once exclusive country club was developed as an extension of the powerful social clubs operating in Chicago prior to World War II. Offering horseback riding, golf, and other amenities, it was frequented by movie stars, politicians and other celebrities. Since its last private event in 1974, the club was purchased by the Chicago Park District and has been restored to its original design.
